A Jump Drive is a device needed to make a Jump. It tampers with the structure of the universe in such a manner that your ship can penetrate it and thereby save aeons of time in its movement between locations.
Tampering only works at locations in space where the structure of the universe is utterly pervious and thus unable to resist the powers of a Jump Drive.
