Research is an odd category, because the most valuable developments are not often incarnated in material goods, and when they are, they're often one-off prototypes. This is a category where some additional engine support is probably warranted. Colonists are delivered to a colony encased in Cryogenic Pods allowing the colony to increase its population only when required and as resources allow. While true colonials exist, the usual colonist is often a debt defaulter or light criminal sentenced to colonial service for a period of years or until they can earn passage away from the colony.

Cargo/Goods Descriptions all cargo types

Research

Research is an odd category, because the most valuable developments are not often incarnated in material goods, and when they are, they're often one-off prototypes. This is a category where some additional engine support is probably warranted. Items here could well be generated somewhat on the fly as with something like http://www.cs.purdue.edu/homes/dec/essay.topic.generator.html or http://www-cse.ucsd.edu/users/mihir/crypto-topic-generator.html with appropriately defined lists that will generate items wanted by various specific user groups.

Things that are similar to cargo, but best handled via missions or other script-oriented approaches: Transport: Passengers of various forms, or, as courier, data Technological advances: While one imagines research institutions to be able to advance the general state of the art, this doesn't make much sense to buy and sell as cargo.

While supporting research institutions should affect tech advancement, buying and selling of some sort of large scale tech advancement is an odd concept. Much simpler to limit the trading of non-material goods to the purchase and resale of various future equivalents to the patent and the copyright.
