Jump Point

About

A Jump Point is a location where the structure of the universe is of such a quality as to allow devices invented for the purpose, so-called Jump Drives, to influence the structure in such a way that it becomes penetrable.

The usefulness of Jump Points lies therein that by penetrating the structure of the universe, one can overcome enourmous distances within no time or almost no time, whereas otherwise one would eventually have to travel for aeons --- even at the maximum speed of the fastest vessel that could possibly be built by the most advanced technologies yet available --- to make for the same distance.

Thus, Jump Points are an aspect of major importance in the more general concept of movement. Since movement has also ever been a crucial moment to consider in strategical and economical considerations, Jump Points can easily get subjected to warfare.

Jump Points work by connecting locations of the universe to other locations of the same. You can as well call that their function. Locations of the universe, in the sense relevant to Jump Points, are systems and, thereby, sectors.

Since Jump Points are not perceptible by the unaided senses of (most) living creatures, your ships computers create a virtual image onto your HUD to illustrate their eventual presence.

Neither take it for granted that all Jump Points can be used from all locations they may lead you to, nor remain assured of the persistency of any Jump Point you discover. The structure of the universe is so much intricated as to there is always chances for your Jump Drive to render peculiar results when merryly engaged.

Remark

This article is intended to be read in conjuntion with Jump Drive and Jump, starting with Jump.
