The Hari Empire was wiped out by the Kilrathi in 2480-2489. A thousand worlds were systematically wiped out, and the remaining Hari committed suicide[1].
The Hari never discovered faster than light travel; they expanded their empire by sending colonists at sublight speeds and then, upon finding suitable worlds, rapidly expanding their population[2].

(NOTE: At least, that's the story according to the kats, but can you trust what
a kat says? ... I wouldn't be surprised if there were still one or two hundred
planets where hari still live and thrive; and prepair for the next war... ;-). No,
seriously; if the kats had colonized that many worlds, they'd be out-manufacturing
the terran confederation by 20 to 1, not by 2 to 1. )
